I graduated 10 years ago and work as a translator. I earn 18 K a year. My office is OK but my boss won’t increase my pay. I am starting to panic about if I will ever be able to buy my own home. Is this a good rate or should I change career or find a better job?

In my “opinion” — YES !

There are *other* considerations *in my opinion* which can be more important than trying for the “20 Years of Service Pension”.

The best reasons I can give you:

1. Job Stability – in Civilian work you can lose your Job much more easily.
2. Current U.S.A. High Unemployment Rate – you may have difficulty finding a different Job.
3. U.S. Army Benefits – Non-Payroll Benefits are at an all-time high.
4. If you stay in longer, at least 6-8 years, and do leave U.S. Army Service, a Government or Government Contractor Job is MUCH easier to get. 10 years (or more) Service and you can get a very high-paying Government Contractor Job. U.S. Army Contractor and U.S. Government Contractor Employers place high value on your accumulated years of U.S. Army experience, more so if you have more than 4 years of experience.

Eligibility
To qualify for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) you must:

work on average less than 16 hours a week
normally be aged 18 or over but below State Pension age – there are some exceptions for 16 to 17 year olds
not be in full-time education
live in England, Scotland or Wales
If you live in Northern Ireland, contact your local Social Security or Jobs and Benefits Office.

Extra rules for contribution-based JSA

You can only claim contribution-based JSA for 6 months – after this, you may still be able to get income-based JSA.

The amount you can get might go down if you have:

earnings from part-time work
an occupational or personal pension
Extra rules for income-based JSA

Usually, to qualify for income-based JSA:

your partner (if you have one) must work less than 24 hours a week on average
you and your partner must have less than £16,000 in savings
Your household income can affect how much you get too. This includes money from savings (if you have £6,000 or more), pensions and earnings.

Q&A: What is a good way to receive more salary NET without changing the BASE or BRUT?

Question by zorroorojo: What is a good way to receive more salary NET without changing the BASE or BRUT?
Every month I see that my colleague receives more and more money NET but her Salary basic / brut doesn’t change?

Are there any tricks Im missing out on?
Any ideas?. I live in SPAIN.

To be honest it’s pretty hard to answer this without knowing more about why your colleague’s situation is different. The easiest way to find out would be to compare her payslip with yours. There are two ways in which you can end up with more net income from the same basic salary – additional payments or fewer deductions. For example, sometimes people have overtime or shift allowances which are added on to their pay. But if her gross income (In English it’s gross rather than brut) is not changing it would have to be the deductions which are different. My understanding is that income tax is not deducted from salary in Spain, but if income tax payments are being made, this can change the amount of deductions, and two employees may have different tax situations (for example people with children pay less tax). It’s also possible that there are differences in “voluntary” deductions – for example one person might be paying into a pension fund and another might not. Finally, net pay can be affected by the employer correcting errors made in previous months. For example my company recently paid out a bonus to certain staff twice by mistake, and then had to reduce their net pay a little until the overpayment was paid back.
